An exhibition inspired by the works of popular artist Jimmy Liao opened at the Huashan 1914 Creative Park in Taipei Dec. 22.
One of Taiwan’s best-known illustrators, Liao is most often referred to simply as Jimmy.
The event features designers and artists from Taiwan and Sweden. Its theme “How to Own a Corner” is borrowed from Jimmy’s 2008 illustrated book of the same title, according to show organizer Jimmy S.P.A. Co. Ltd.
The exhibition room is divided into 12 sections, each featuring an artistic installation inspired by illustrations from Jimmy’s books “One More Day with You” and “How to Own a Corner,” the organizer said.
“Both books are about loss and loneliness in life, but they also exemplify a child’s ability to conquer sadness with imagination,” said Jimmy.
“To recreate Jimmy’s snow-filled landscape, we put together parts of recycled motherboards to build a city, and above it we placed colorful light-emitting-diode lamps,” said Tony Tang of Asus Design Center, one of the participating artists.
Hiroko Tsuchimoto and Ceen Wahren, from the Creative Hub of Stockholm, Sweden, handcrafted a forest made of felt streaks and silk stockings.
“Stockings are symbols of womanhood,” said Tsuchimoto. “We wanted to express a girl’s inner struggles as she grows up to become a woman.”
A play based on “One More Day with You” will debut at the exhibition Dec. 24.
“The performance will be an unprecedented combination of magic tricks, original music and touching stories,” said the play’s director Liu Chi-ling, an award-winning musician and composer. (HZW)
